Major Events
Many events happened in the Middle Ages; and they had a big effect on the geography of Europe. Some took over one hundred years but one thing is certain that they all had their impact on the lifestyles of the people. This important is because without these events our world would be much different. Some of these events include: The Magna Carta, The Black Death, The Crusades, and The Hundred Year's War. -Kobe

The Black Death
The Black Death in many ways changed Europe and the people in it forever. The Black Death destroyed the towns and the people. People would abandon their family member that had the plague or the symptoms only to save their own life. Logically it changed Europe because everybody's life were at risk of getting sick or even dying and the people who didn't get the plague saw the difference in Europe, a sick place they weren't used to.
The Black Death was a very sad time in Europe. Fear was found in the people all over town, the healthy shunned the sick thinking it would keep them well. They put themselves into small communities, as separatists in houses so none of the sick could come near. The healthy people wouldn’t look out of their windows because they didn’t want to see dead bodies or bodies being led off to burial. They also didn’t want to hear the cries of the sick and dying. It was a depressing life but they thought it was the only way to stay alive.
Some took a very different approach to the sickness. They drank and ate and kept on going as they wanted. They would even come in contact with the sick or places they had been. Maybe they felt they might as well enjoy themselves since they were probably going to die. Or maybe they were in denial about their circumstances.

The Crusades
The first Crusade took place in Jerusalem, it was from 1096-1099 A.D. The three major religions grouped up and claimed the land of the Palestine as their holy city. The religions were Christian, Muslim, and Jewish. The Christians thought it was a place where Jesus was crucified and ascended to heaven. The Muslims thoughts it was a place where Muhammad was ascended to heaven. And the Jews thought it was a site of the ancient temple built by Solomon.
After awhile it wasn’t just the Christians, Muslim, and the Jews, in 600 C.E. the Arabs entered the city and took control. But they still allowed Christian and Jewish pilgrims to visit Jerusalem, and they could live there if they wanted as long as they paid their taxes.
There was never just one Crusade; there was four of them. The second Crusade lasted from 1147-1149 A.D. And the third one lasted from 1189-1192 A.D. And lastly the fourth Crusade lasted from 1202-1204 A.D. The second and third Crusades were not successful when they attacked Jerusalem, but when the fourth Crusade came along they didn’t attack Jerusalem; they attacked Constantinople. They stole a lot from Constantinople, including; statues, money, paintings, and jewelry. They burned libraries, and they destroyed churches. There wasn’t just Crusades with adults in them, the Children’s Crusade was in 1212, and it was a tragedy. Thousands and thousands of French and German children dies trying to reach Jerusalem, and they thought that God would help them because they were children, but they were clearly wrong.
There was a big sign of the Crusades; The Red Cross. Each Crusader had a big red cross stitched on to their clothes made out of fabric, or painted onto their armor. It made them look like a unified army. They said it reminded them that they were fighting for a holy cause. The red cross was also stitched onto flags and banners.
The Crusades helped to break down feudalism by increasing the authority of kings. Some nobles didn’t make it in the battle without leaving an heir, and their lands passed to their king. Some nobles sold their land, and some nobles gave their land to their serfs.
After a while Western Europe began to be interested in trade. The Crusaders would bring back luxury goods, and these items were vastly popular throughout Western Europe. And in order to get more Western Europe began to trade with their neighbors. These goods included; silk, spices, sugar, art, and most importantly literature.

The Magna Carta
The Magna Carta mean “Great Charter” was a strict set of rules stating what the monarch could and couldn’t do. The Magna Carta basically gave the people more rights and less to the Monarch. It was formed by his own people, the nobles. The document was formed in England in 1213 after the king had gone mad with his power. King John and his brother King Richard were polar opposites, Richard was a role model, perfect king meanwhile his brother, John, was all about himself. King John had the angered the people in three distinct ways the first being that he raised taxes. When he raised taxes, he forced them to buy items for high prices. Secondly, he made the people in the kingdom build many many palaces for him. Finally, every so often John would demand money for war against France. But every time he went into battle he lost the land and lots of soldiers. The nobles were fed up with the king so they composed The Magna Carta. The Nobles outnumbering the King, cornered him and threatening him to sign it.
The Magna Carta has affected Europe greatly and has inspired some ideas in our Constitution. The excerpts inside states some of the rights the people in the kingdom has. For example no one will be be forced to testify against himself, you must ask the owner’s permission to used their property, and everyone has rights that can’t be taken away. Many of these rights was found in our amendments.
When the nobles made this document they were furious. They approached the king with swords and knives. The king thought to himself what did I do? I’m gonna die. That was exactly what the nobles set out to do. It was either sign this document or die. Without a second thought John signed the paper. This was a major breakthrough for Europe because it gave everyone more equal rights. The king also had less rights and government was more decided by the people themselves.

The Hundred Years' War
The Hundred Years’ War consisted of many wars in between France and England. These wars were from 1337 to 1453. The war started when King Philip VI, from France, attempted to confiscate English territory. It ended in July of 1453 when the French expelled the English from the territory. The Hundred Years War was a series of wars and battles.
The Hundred Years’ War was caused by the relationship of the king of France and England. In 1346 the first battle against the French and the English was battled. Edward III landed in Normandy with about 10,000 soldiers. The French attacked without the benefit of a plan. In total, the French made about 15 attacks in this battle. All in all, this battle was The battle of Crecy.
The battle of Portiers was in 1356. After six years of taking a break, Edward the black prince, the son of Edward III, raided the English territory. This attack almost succeeded until the English king planned a counter attack right in time. It was a disastrous battle for France. The French king was captured with about 2,000 of his men. They demanded an enormous ransom for the return.
The continuing battle was the Battle of Le Rochelle. This battle was in 1372 and was a fierce naval battle. The French took control of the English Channel. This made it almost impossible to ferry reinforcement to Calais.

To sum it all up, these events were very important and helpful in a way that they reunited with France. Reuniting all of France was extremely important because there would be only one ruler and it would become the great nation that it was before. But these battles served as much more than just a battle or treaty they were saviors. If events like these did not happen our modern geography as we know it may be different. -Kobe
